We prepared for our backpacking camping trip scheduled for Saturday morning. We'll be taking a train to the Indiana Dunes in Porter, Indiana for an overnight. Everyone participating will carry all required personal gear and share the load of the group food and equipment. There will be one supply car. All transportation to and from the camping site will be by foot, so this is one big hike with full backpacks. If needed, younger scouts can put some of their supplies in the car to lighten their load. Scoutmaster Howie's Scoutmaster Minute probed the term "obedient" in the scout oath since tomorrow is the planned high school walk out of school for 17 minutes to honor the 17 students recently killed in school by a gunman. Scoutmaster Howie encouraged that the word obedient still means that one should do the right thing like in David Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience."
Thank you to all the scouts and adults who helped to canvas food donations for Trinity Methodist Church who will pass the food to the local food pantry. Scouts also collected about $450 in pancake ticket sales.
Mr. Fontanetta, New Trier Athletic Director, was the guest speaker. He spoke about the expectations of being part of a team and a troop. Let's remember his advice to remember that we the scouts represent Boy Scouts to the community so we have to hold ourselves to a higher standard. Remember what the Boy Scout oath and code means and put those words into action.
Fifteen of our scouts split into Team Tape Sandwiches and Team Spaghetti Squids to compete in the First Aid Meet on Saturday, March 3, 2018. At the 4 hour meet, Tape Sandwiches came in 4th place for their performance in the stations to address first aid situations. Additionally, in the Candy Bag Challenge, both teams as a group answered a series of multiple choice questions about first aid; Team Tape Sandwiches was awarded 3rd place and Team Spaghetti Squids was awarded 2nd place, both teams receiving a large bag of candy to share among the team members. 16 council teams were present today. SPL Cooper, ASPL Michael, and QM Ian led a First Aid training that included setting up stretcher with two poles and heavy cloth. The stretcher was strong enough to carry our younger scouts. Scoutmaster Howie presented his Scoutmaster Minutes on the topic of women who are different from men in many ways. Men coexist with women, so welcome women to be part of your world.
